Layout Designer

Budget: $1,000 to $2,500

Project-based independent contractor: $1,800-$2,500 based on experience.

WHYY is searching for a layout designer with experience in newspaper/newsletter design to bring a print edition of the NewsWorks website to life. The one-off print edition is a content-based marketing tool fine-tuned to sample the smart, local content of the NewsWorks website to tens of thousands of people in the Philly region and convert them into regular NewsWorks website users.

Project Scope
To design and execute an 8-page print newspaper for one-time use in collaboration with WHYYs marketing department.

Throughout September: Mock-up a frame design based on content and marketing needs. Discuss print specifications and assist in evaluating print bids. Refine frame design with feedback from WHYY team, including the Design Manager and Marketing Manager

October 2-9 (estimated): Input final content/images into design, making final adjustments under direction of Design Manager and Marketing Manager. Package final version for printer.

The project will last from September to October, with multiple and important deadlines the first two weeks of October. Candidate MUST be available to work regularly/intensely October 4- October 11 as we approach press time.

We are looking for an energetic, creative and proactive person with a passion for writing and communications to join us as a paid intern/part-time contractor. The position requires a flexible schedule and will work for home. Most communication will be by email and phone, physical location is not important for this position. Successful candidates will be detail oriented, regularly meets deadlines and takes direction well. Ideal candidates are interested in general business, health/health care and the nonprofit sector. Excellent writing skills are required.

Part Time Developer

The part time developer will work closely with the web developer to keep our website updated.Responsibilities:Basic front end for all projects – html, css and basic javascript/jquery
Basic web maintenance (most of this translates to find and fix things like the slider and make our website faster!):
Updating codes and plugins, and testing them on the development site.
Reporting back if updating plugins breaks anything on our website, and informing me if it is more than a basic fix.

  • Crawling the site for code breaks

  • Making sure that the libraries and scripts we use are up to date
  • Monitoring server usage
