1. How to Create a Black Friday Background

Step 1

Create a new document in InDesign by going to File > New. Change the dimensions to 1080 px x 1920 px and 36 px Margins.

Step 2

Open the 11.jpg file from the foil textures folder in Adobe Photoshop. Go to Image > Image Rotation > 90° Clockwise to make the image vertical. Change the color to CMYK by going to Image > Mode > CMYK Color. Lastly, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and change the Radius to 42 pixels. Save the file as a TIFF.

Step 3

Go back to InDesign, select the Rectangle Tool (M), and cover the background. Create a New Color Swatch R0 G0 B0 by selecting the hamburger menu in the top-right corner of the Swatches panel. 

Step 4

Select the Rectangle Frame Tool (F) and create a vertical rectangle that covers the background. File > Place the foil texture we just saved. Increase the size to 137% and change the Opacity to 50%. Change the Mode to Hard Light by going to Object > Effects > Transparency.

Step 5

Create another vertical rectangle frame and fill it with the R0 G0 B0 swatch. Change the Transparency Mode to Hard Light and apply a Radial Gradient Feather.

2. How to Apply Text Effects in InDesign

Step 1

Grab the Type Tool (T) and type "Black Friday" using the Wonder Corner 460 pt font.

Step 2

Create a new swatch by selecting the R0 G0 B0 and change the Tint to 28%. Select the new swatch (square plus icon) at the bottom of the Swatches panel. Highlight the word "Black" and create a Gradient using the Paper and 28% tint swatch. Do the same to the word "Friday".

Step 3

Grab the Selection Tool (V) and select the "Black" text frame. Apply a Drop Shadow by going to Objects > Effects > Drop Shadow. Use these settings:

• Mode: Multiply | R0 G0 B0 | Opacity: 100%


• Distance: 20 px


• X and Y Offset: 14.142 px


• Angle: 135°


• Size: 90 px 


• Spread: 20%


• Noise: 0%

Step 4

Create a New Color Swatch using the colors R126 G213 B241 in the Swatches panel. Add an Inner Shadow layer effect. Use these settings:

• Mode: Multiply | R126 G213 B241 | Opacity: 75%


• Distance: 7 px


• X Offset: 3.5 px


• Y Offset: 6.062 px


• Angle: 120°


• Size: 18 px 


• Choke: 0%


• Noise: 0%

Step 5

Add an Inner Glow layer effect. Use these settings:

• Mode: Normal | Paper swatch | Opacity: 75%


• Technique: Softer


• Source: Edge


• Size: 12 px


• Noise: 0%


• Choke: 0%

Step 6

Select the "Friday" text frame and apply the Inner Shadow and Inner Glow settings we used previously.

3. How to Add Graphic Elements to a Black Friday Instagram Story

Step 1

Grab the Rectangle Tool (M) and make a banner. Fill it with the baby blue swatch. Take the Type Tool (T) and type "Supplies Limited" using the Engine 29 pt font. Copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) this banner and place it at the bottom of the Black Friday story. Move the banners to the back, underneath the radial gradient layer (Command-[).

Step 2

Open the gold foil numbers and percent sign PSD files in Photoshop. Delete all the other layers besides the gold balloon layers. Change the mode to CMYK by going to Image > Mode > CMYK Color. Save the file as a TIFF. File > Place the foil balloons in InDesign.

Step 3

Add a Drop Shadow to each of the numbers and percent signs. Use these settings:

• Mode: Multiply | R0 G0 B0 | Opacity: 75%


• Distance: 10.023 px


• X Offset: -6.443 px


• Y Offset: -7.678 px


• Angle: -50°


• Size: 63.788 px 


• Spread: 0%


• Noise: 0%

Step 4

Create a New Color Swatch R214 G154 B0. Using Wonder Corner 120 pt, type the word "OFF". Select the Rectangle Tool (M) and create two diamond shapes.

Step 5

Add the promotional code in the bottom left corner along with the website using Wonder Corner 80 pt and 120 pt and Pulse 30 pt.

Step 6

Bring up the document grid by clicking Command-'. Make a tag shape using the Pen Tool (P).

Step 7

Create a circle using the Ellipse Tool (L) and place it at the top of the price tag. Duplicate (Command-C and Command-V) the circle and put it to the side. Bring up the Pathfinder panel (Window > Object & Layout > Pathfinder) and select the price tag and circle. Select the Subtract icon.

Step 8

Take the duplicated circle we put to the side, and change the Fill to None and the Stroke to Paper swatch. Change the Stroke Weight to 9 pt.

Step 9

Open the brown texture in Photoshop. Change the image to CMYK by going to Image > Mode > CMYK Color. Go to Image > Image Size. Change the Resolution to 300 and make sure Resample is unchecked. Press OK and save the file as a TIFF.

Step 10

Select the price tag in InDesign and File > Place the brown texture we just saved as a TIFF. Change this layer's Transparency to Multiply.

Step 11

Move the tag layer so that it's underneath the 50% balloons. Add the date of your Black Friday sale to the price tag using the Pulse font.

Step 12

Take the Pen Tool (P) and make the string for your price tag. Change the Stroke Type to Wavy, the Weight to 11 pt, and the color to blue.

Step 13

Open the tape stickers in Illustrator. Copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) the badge into InDesign. Add the brown texture to the badge and type the words, "Biggest Sale Ever!"

Step 14

Open the smart TV in Photoshop. Change the Color Overlay of the screen to #152532 by Double-Clicking the layer and selecting Color Overlay. Delete the background layer and change the color mode to CMYK. Save it as a TIFF. File > Place this file in InDesign at the bottom of the Instagram ad template.

Step 15

Open the train-ticket.svg file in Illustrator. Copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) it into InDesign. Add the price and discounted price to the TV using the Pulse font. Add a gold 4 pt stroke using the Pen Tool (P).

Step 16

Create another badge with the words "Special Buy". Add a Drop Shadow layer effect using these settings:

• Mode: Multiply | R0 G0 B0 | Opacity: 32%


• Distance: 4 px


• X and Y Offset: 2.828 px


• Angle: 135°


• Size: 13 px 


• Spread: 0%


• Noise: 0%
