Spotify Plus is a new tier with Premium features on the cheap, but it still has ads

Spotify is testing new things, but nothing is set in stone yet.

Spotify might soon offer a new price plan for people that need something in between the free and Premium tiers.

The Verge first wrote about the new plan, called Spotify Plus, which is currently being tested with a limited number of users.

In one test, Spotify Plus costs $0.99 per month — a lot less than the $9.99/month Premium tier. Unlike the free tier, Plus lets users choose which songs they want to play, and which they want to skip. However, just like the free tier, Spotify Plus also features ads.

According to the publisher, the $0.99/month price may not be set in stone; instead it could just be one of the price points that Spotify is testing the new tier at in order to gauge user interest.

The $9.99 Premium tier lets users listen to whichever tracks they want to, with no restrictions, and no ads.

Spotify confirmed the news to The Verge, but would not give out many further details. "We're currently conducting a test of an ad-supported subscription plan with a limited number of our users," a company spokesperson told the outlet, while emphasizing that Spotify Plus may never see the light of day.

Spotify has another subscription tier waiting to be launched. Spotify HiFi, which will include tracks with lossless audio compression, was announced in February. The company never shared the price, or the exact date of availability, though. Its biggest competitor, Apple Music, launched lossless audio streaming in June.
