Report: EPA asked Volkswagen to build electric models in the U.S. to offset Dieselgate

Last December, a group of electric vehicle and green energy enthusiasts — including Elon Musk — sent an open letter to the head of California Air Resources Board, Mary Nichols, urging the agency to force Volkswagen to build more electric models instead of repair the some 600,000 emissions-cheating diesel models in the United States.

The Environmental Protection Agency took the letter's proposal seriously and has asked the German carmaker to build more electrified vehicles at its plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee — as well as build a nationwide network of charging stations to make up for Dieselgate, according to Reuters, which cited a report in German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.
