1. How to Make a Flower Brush in Procreate

Step 1

In this flower brush Procreate tutorial, I'm using an iPad Pro, an Apple Pencil, and the Procreate 5.2 app.

First, launch the Procreate app and click on the + icon in the top-right corner. This will open up a new canvas, which you need to do in order to access the Brush Library. Once the canvas is opened, click on the brush icon at the top right of the screen. This will launch the Brush Library.

Step 2

To make a new brush, tap the + icon in the top-right corner of the Brush Library menu.

This will launch the Brush Studio and make a new brush that will use Procreate's default settings.

Step 3

Let's look at how to create a stamp brush in Procreate.

First, we are going to change the shape of the brush to a flower. Before editing this within the Brush Studio, we will need to create our flower shape. Head back to your canvas and draw the flower shape of your choice.

Step 4

For the next step, we only want the flower shape and not the white background, so to remove this, untick the Background colour box, which can be found under the Layers panel.

Step 5

The shape needs to be white before it can be imported into the Brush Studio, so set the colour to white by selecting a white shade from the Colours panel, drag the colour swatch (circled in red) into the shape, and release to change the colour.

Step 6

Now it's time to copy the shape ready for importing into the brush shape. To do this, open the Actions menu and select Copy canvas.

Step 7

Reopen Brush Studio and tap the Shape section of the menu to the left of the screen. Tap the Edit button to launch the Shape Editor.

Step 8

Tap Import in the top-right corner of the screen to reveal the Image source options menu. Then click on Paste to import your flower shape.

The flower shape has now been successfully imported. Press Done to close the Shape Editor window.

Step 9

We can now begin to edit the rest of the settings to turn the brush into a stamp. Select the Stroke path section of the menu, and increase the Spacing slider to Max.

The Spacing setting controls the number of times a brush shape is stamped along a path; therefore, the larger the spacing, the more space there is between stamps. When designing a stamp brush, you will want this space to be large enough that your brush will only stamp one shape at a time.

You can easily test out your brush as you edit the settings by drawing on the Drawing Pad to the left of the screen. To clear the pad, click on Drawing Pad at the top of the screen and tap Clear drawing pad.

Step 10

Next, head to the Apple Pencil section of the menu. Here, you will want to switch off the Opacity setting by dragging the slider to None. This means that the shape will stay fully opaque and won't change depending on the amount of pressure applied to the brush.

Step 11

Next, you will need to head to the Properties section of the menu. Firstly, we will be increasing the Preview size to 49%; this determines the size of the brush stamp preview in the Brush Library menu.

Then, we are going to set the Smudge slider to None. This setting determines how much the brush smudges when set as the Smudge tool.

Lastly, we are going to set the Maximum size to Max and the Minimum size to None. These sliders determine the upper and lower size limits that the brush will reach when adjusting the size using the size slider.

Step 12

Now it's time to name the brush. Tap on the About this brush section of the menu, and then click on the text circled in red to rename the brush. If you'd like, you can add your name and signature to this page, which helps you retain credit for the brush if you plan to share it online.

2. How to Use a Flower Brush in Procreate

Next, we are going to go through an example of how you can use a Procreate flower stamp brush within an artwork.

Step 1

To begin with, I'm going to be using this portrait drawing. I will be using the flower brush to add some funky details to the background.

Step 2

On a new layer, I selected my flower stamp brush and stamped the first flower using a pink shade that complements the drawing.

Step 3

I adjusted the size of the brush using the size slider, and continued to add a few more flower shapes around the bottom half of the drawing.

Step 4

I changed the brush to a yellow shade and added further flower stamps within the gaps in the bottom half of the page.
