How to Quickly Customize Modern Keynote Templates

For the examples in this section, I'm going to use the Unleash Keynote presentation template from Envato Elements. Here are some examples of what you can do with a good Keynote design:

1. Change the Color

I'm going to start with slide #42. There are several vertical boxes on this slide in varying shades of blue. I'm going to change the color of one of those boxes to gray.

 Click inside the vertical box that you would like to change the color of. Then, click on the vertical box of your choice. 

Handles, which look like little white boxes, will appear on the top and bottom of the box you selected. This ensures that you've got the correct box selected. 

Next go to Style section on the side of your screen. This is where you can choose colors. Click the box of the color that you want. 

Now you've changed the color of one of the vertical boxes! Continue customizing the colors of your Keynote design.

2. Change the Font

For this example, I'll use slide #14. To change the font on a slide, highlight the text that you want to change. 

Then, go to the side of your screen under the Text tab. Go to the Font Size field and use the up and down arrow to make the font larger or smaller. You can also type in the Font Size box.

3. Change the Keynote Background Color

For this example, I'll start with slide #2. To change the Keynote background color to a different color, go to the side of your screen. Click the Background option under Slide Layout. 

You'll get to select which color you'd like for the background color. Once you find the color you want, select it. 

Now you know how to change the Keynote background color of a slide.

4. Edit the Built-in Charts

Data is a great way to up the ante on your Keynote design. But instead of showing data with bullet points or tables, use visuals that tell a story intuitively.

That's the value of slides like #47. It already has all the basics built for you. All that you need to do is update the placeholders with your data. To start editing data, click on the Edit Chart Data button just below a graph.

You'll see a new window pop up that acts as an embedded spreadsheet. This new window controls the data that feeds the chart. Type over the existing data and the slide will update automatically in real-time. 

To round out your Keynote slide, you can even tweak the style. Click on the color swatch dropdowns just above the data table to customize the chart colors.

This example shows the value of using Keynote themes. Instead of learning how to present data on your own, you only need to fill in the placeholders. That's a powerful way to work with creative Keynote templates.

5. Update Image Placeholders

One of my favorite Keynote template features is the easy-to-adjust image placeholders. Pre-built Keynote themes come packaged with eye-catching slides that make it easy to update.

Slide #6 is my favorite example of this. When you open it, you'll see a practically blank slate that's just waiting for an image. Click on the image icon at the lower right corner to browse. Or drag and drop an image file on top off the placeholder.

That's truly all there is to it. you don't have to worry about cropping and resizing when you use the built-in placeholders.  

Now, update your Keynote template slide with any other details you might need. In my case, that means typing over the text boxes with my specifics.
