In this step-by-step lesson, you will learn how to create a cute baby first-year infographic template in Adobe Photoshop.

This template also can be used for older children, adults, etc. Simply print your design and a great birthday present is ready!

What You Will Need

You'll need access to Adobe Photoshop; if you don't have the software, you can download a trial from the Adobe website. You'll also need:

• Kyle T. Webster brushes set


• two photos of your baby (1, 2) and one photo of your baby's favorite toy. You can use your own photos!


• Beautiful script, serif, and sans-serif fonts. I used The Salvador.

1. Work With the Photos

Step 1

First of all, we need to prepare our workflow.

To make a file for print, create a New Document (Command-N) in Adobe Photoshop and select the Print > A4 template (210mm x 297mm, Resolution 300 px/inch, color mode CMYK). If you don't want to print your infographic, you can select the RGB color mode and any other size and resolution (usually we use a 72 px/inch resolution for web).

Step 2

Find two photos of the baby in good quality. It could be photos of the baby with a favorite toy, lying, sitting, or standing. The main thing is that the baby in the picture is alone and clearly visible. Open the photo in Photoshop (Command-O) and duplicate the background layer (Command-J). You can turn off the background layer by clicking on the eye icon, so that you don't affect the original photo on the background layer.

Step 3

There are two options to separate the figure from the background. If you are not very familiar with the Pen Tool, you can easily use the Eraser Tool (Command-E). Vary the size of the eraser with the [ (smaller) and ] (bigger) buttons. Simply delete the background around the baby. Be careful and remove all the pieces of background.

Step 4

The more professional way is to use the Pen Tool (Command-P). If you don't know how to use the Pen Tool, check the great official Adobe tutorials about the Pen Tool and Shapes. Envato Tuts+ also has a very simple and clear Photoshop Pen Tool tutorial with animated GIFs. 

Using the Pen Tool, draw the outline of the baby. Remember, you always can use Command-Z to Undo your last action. Also, you can use Command-+ or Command-- to zoom in or zoom out.

To edit any of the Anchor Points, use the Direct Selection Tool (A), and be sure that you selected the white arrow from the tool panel.

Step 5

Right-click and select the Make Selection option. Press Command-J, and we have our adorable baby on a separate layer. 

Step 6

Click and Hold the baby's layer and move it to your original A4 file that we prepared earlier. You should see the hand icon while moving it. 

Step 7

Repeat the steps with the second baby's photo. Good habits are to rename your layers properly and convert the necessary images to Smart Objects. If you resize a regular image in Photoshop, it will lose its quality, but a Smart Object will stay in good quality at any size. Simply Right-Click on the layer and select Convert to Smart Object. Repeat the process with both photos. Now we can change the size of the pictures without consequences.

Step 8

Move your photos with the Move Tool (V) and resize them with the Transform Tool (Command-T). Select the Background layer (unlock it first by clicking on the lock icon) and Fill (Command-G) with #f7f2ef color.

2. Add the Name

Step 1

Type the baby's name. I used the great font The Salvador from Envato Elements, the Salvador Script variant. You can use any other beautiful script font.

Step 2

With the Pen Tool (P), draw the body of the ribbon. After drawing the outlines, select the Shape button on the top tool panel. Remember that you can edit your points with the white arrow of the Direct Selection Tool (A). Color it to #59331c. You can select the fill color on the top toolbar.  Select the name and change the type color to #f7f2ef.

Step 3

Create a new layer (the blank paper sheet icon on the bottom of the Layers panel or Layer > New > Layer; Command-Shift-N) and draw the ribbon's tails with the Pen Tool (P). Color it to #c1a79b.

Step 4

Time to add some depth and texture. To add the textures, choose the texture brush. I used the official Photoshop Kyle T. Webster Brushes, but you can choose any other awesome brush sets. To add a grainy texture, I used the Airbrush - Grainy Opaque brush from the Kyle T. Webster set. 

Create a new clipping mask above the Ribbon Tails layer. Click on the Ribbon Tails layer and go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask (or use the Option-Command-G shortcut). Select the Brush Tool (B), choose the relevant texture brush from the top left corner brush icon, and draw a texture on your new clipping mask. I used a darker brown color and set the overlay mode to Multiply. You can set the mode in the small menu above the layers list.

Step 5

Add the texture to the ribbon's body in the same way. You can vary the layer's opacity with the keyboard number buttons (from 1 to 9) or change the Opacity parameters in the small menu above the layer's list.

Step 6

Select the name layer. Double-click the layer to open the Layer Style menu. Select the Drop Shadow parameters and set the Blend Mode to Multiply, play with the Opacity, Distance, Size, Spread and Noise settings to get a nice result.

Step 7

Using Shift or Command, select all the layers related to the name and to the ribbon and Group them (Command-G). Select the Move Tool (V) and select Auto Select Group. Now you can move layer groups simply by clicking on them on your artboard with the Move Tool (V) activated.

3. Date and Time

Step 1

Select the Type Tool (T) and print the date and time of birth information. Everything (Day of the week, Date, Time) should be on separate layers. You can move and resize your text with the Transform Tool (Command-T). I used The Salvador Condensed font from The Salvador font collection.

Step 2

Time to add some icons. Select the Ellipse Tool from the side toolbar and draw a circle while holding Shift. Set the properties (Window > Properties) as in the picture below. We'll use white for the fill and #59331c for the stroke.

Step 3

Create a new layer and draw the clock's hands. Set the parameters as in the picture below.

Step 4

Click the clock circle layer and Duplicate (Command-J) it. Select the Direct Selection Tool (A), white arrow, and delete the bottom anchor point. With the Transform Tool (Command-T), make the shape smaller.

Step 5

Rotate and Move the new shape (Command-T) and Duplicate it (Command-J). Select the Transform Tool (Command-T) with the active copy layer, Right-click the object on the artboard, and select Flip Horizontal. Move it to the right place.

Step 6

As we did with the hands, add some strokes to the clock using the Pen Tool (P).

Step 7

Select all the layers related to the clock and Group (Command-G) them. Right-Click on the group and select Convert to Smart Object. Now we have a nice clock icon. Move it to the right place with the Move Tool (V). Resize it if necessary with the Transform Tool (Command-T).

4. Weight and Height

Step 1

Select the Ellipse Tool (U), hold Shift, and draw a small circle. Color it to our dark brown color #59331c.

Step 2

Create another layer and draw a weight handle with the Pen Tool (P). Select both layers related to the weight icon and Convert to Smart Object.

Step 3

Select the Custom Shape Tool (press U, and select the right icon from the side tool panel, the same place as the Ellipse Tool). From the top menu, select the icon depending on the sex of the child.

Hold Shift and draw the icon in dark brown color, with no stroke.

Step 4

Using The Salvador Condensed font from The Salvador font collection, type the height and weight information. You can move and resize your text and icons with the Transform Tool (Command-T).

Step 5

Using the Pen Tool (P), draw a straight line and apply the dotted style to it, with no fill and a dark brown stroke color. Duplicate (Command-J) the line and move both between the lines of text.

5. Place of Birth

Step 1

With The Salvador Condensed font for the Place of Birth and The Salvador Serif for the City, type the text. Rearrange elements with the Transform Tool (Command-T) if necessary.

Step 2

Select the Custom Shape Tool (U), select the heart shape from the dropdown menu, hold Shift and draw a heart.

6. Teeth, Eye Color, and Diaper Size

Step 1

Type the number of teeth and the eye color. To make uppercase text, go to Window > Character and apply the uppercase icon to the selected text.

Step 2

With the Pen Tool (P), draw a kind of fish shape. Set the stroke color to dark brown and the fill color to white. If your corners look rough, set the corners settings to round corners.

Step 3

With the Ellipse Tool (press U, and select the ellipse option from the side menu in the same place as the Custom Shape Tool), hold Shift, and draw a circle. Move (V) it to the center of the eye.

Step 4

If you want, draw some eyelashes with the Pen Tool (P). Select all the layers related to the eye icon, Group them (Command-G), and Convert to Smart Object.

Step 5

Use The Salvador Condensed font to type the diaper size text (Text Tool, T keyboard) and The Salvador Serif to type the actual size number. Resize the text with the Transform Tool (Command-T).

7. Actual Weight and Height

Step 1

With the Ellipse Tool (U), draw an ellipse. Open the Properties panel (Window > Properties) and set the fill color to white, stroke color to dark brown, stroke width 3 pt, and regular stroke style.

Step 2

On the same layer, draw a triangle with the Pen Tool (P). Check that the Combine Shapes function is activated. Now we have a speech bubble.

Step 3

Type separately "I'm" and "year old" with The Salvador Condensed font, and add "1" with The Salvador Serif font. Also, type the current weight and height information. Digits are separate from the parameter name. You can move and resize your text with the Transform Tool (Command-T).

Step 4

As we did before, add some dotted lines with the Pen Tool (P). The stroke width is 2 pt, and set the Opacity to 50% by pressing the number 5 on the keyboard.

Step 5

Double-click the speech bubble shape layer to activate the Layer Style panel. Set a Drop Shadow with the parameters as in the picture below. You can vary the settings to get a nice result. Also, you can change the original shape a bit using the Direct Selection Tool (A).

8. Favorite Toy

Step 1

Prepare a nice photo of your baby's favorite toy. Cut out it from the background as we did with the baby photo before. Convert the toy photo to a Smart Object and move it above the speech bubble. 

Step 2

Select The Salvador Script font and type "Favorite toy". Set the color to dark brown.

Step 3

Select the Brush Tool (B), and select a hard inking brush—I used Your New Favorite Inker from the Kyle Brush set, but you can also use the default hard brush—and draw a cute arrow from the text to the photo. Also, you can draw with the Pen Tool. Choose the best option for yourself.

9. Additional Text

Step 1

Time to add some more information to our infographic. Select The Salvador Script font and type the baby's zodiac sign and favorite food. I used a light brown color #c1a79b.

Step 2

With the same script font, type the baby's first word near the top photo. Use a dark brown color. You can add some more information in the empty spaces.

10. Decoration

Step 1

Time to decorate our cute infographic! Select the very first background layer and create a new layer above it. Using the Pen Tool (P), draw around the outline of the baby photo and fill it with white.

Step 2

Draw the white shapes behind the other baby photo and the toy photo.

Step 3

Create another layer above the background layer and add some texture with the texture brushes. I used the Add noise brush from the Kyle T. Webster Brushes, but you can select any of the other great texture brushes from Envato Elements. Set the texture layer to the Multiply Mode and play with its opacity.

Step 4

Create another new layer above the texture layer and draw random star shapes using the Pen Tool (P). Fill it with light brown color and set the Multiply Mode and 30% Opacity.

Step 5

Create a new layer on top of the others. I used Your New Favorite Inker from the Kyle Brush set, but you can use the default hard brush or draw lines with the Pen Tool (P). Add some decorative lines, hearts, etc. 

We Are Finished!

This birthday infographic template can be used for older children or even for adults! Just replace the photos and information. You can use this workflow as a base and create your own designs. Thank you for creating and experimenting with me. Enjoy the process, and please share your result!
