How to Create a Vintage Rusted Metal Sign in Adobe Photoshop

Some people like aged, vintage objects, but these old objects can also trigger the fear of growing old. In this tutorial you will learn how to make a metal sign look old and worn in Adobe Photoshop.

Tutorial Assets

The following assets were used during the production of this tutorial:

• Team Spirit Font
• Old Plaster Wall
• Car PNG
• Scratched Texture

1.Create the Wall Background

Step 1

Create a new850 x 570pxdocument, and create a newlayer calledWall Background. Copy andPastetheOld Plaster Wallon this layer.

Step 2

Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and set the level ofSaturation to -57.

Step 3

Create aLevelsadjustment layer and set the levels of theShadow Input Levelto0, theMidtone Input Level to1.22,and theHighlight Input Levelto201. Also set the Highlight Output Level to 153.

Step 4

Create aSelective Coloradjustment layer and set the levels Yellows and Cyans.

2. Create the Rounded Rectangle Shape

Step 1

Create a new layer called Vintage Sign. Pick the Rounded Rectangle Tool and set the Radius to 25 px. Draw a rectangle shapewith rounded corners.

Step 2

Add this layer style to theVintage Signlayer:Drop Shadow (color#141715)andBevel and Emboss (colors:#ffffffand#000000).

3.Create the Vintage Sign

Step 1

Add the Scratched Texture on a new layer above theVintage Signlayer. Right click on theScratched Texture layer and choose Create Clipping Mask.

Step 2

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Selective Color. Right click on the adjustment layer and chooseCreate Clipping Mask.

Step 3

Double click on the Selective Color Thumbnail to edit it. From the Colors drop-down, we'll change the setting for Reds, Yellows, Greens, Whites,and Neutrals.

4. Add the Car PNG

Step 1

Add the Car PNG image on a new layer.

Step 2

Go toLayer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation. Right click on the adjustment layer and chooseCreate Clipping Mask.

To change the color of the car, double click on theHue/Saturation Thumbnailto edit it. Set the Hue to 180 and the Saturation to 51.

Step 3

Go to Image > Trimand make these settings to cut the image.

Step 4

Create amaskfor this layer by clicking on themaskbutton at the bottom of the Layers panel.

Step 5

Go to theScratched Texture layer, keep the Controlkey pressed, and click on the layer thumbnail of the layer to make a selection. Press Control-C to copy the selection.

Step 6

Go to the Car layer and on theChannels tab click on the Car Mask to make it visible. Press Control-V to paste the image.

Press Control-D to deselect.

Step 7

Make sure you are on the Car layer mask thumbnail and go to Image > Adjustments > Levels. Set the Input Levels depending on how you want the image to look.

5. Create the Vintage Text Effect

Step 1

Add the text that you want using the Team Spirit Fonttype. Use the color #ffffff for the text and size 200 pt.

Step 2

Add this layer style to the Vintage Text layer. Drop Shadow (color #000000), Inner Shadow(color#000000), Inner Glow(color#464646), Bevel and Emboss(color#ffffffand #000000), Color Overlay(you can choose the color) and Stroke (color#ffffff).

Click on the Color Overlay style to hide it for now.

Step 3

Add the Scratched Texture on a new layer above the Vintage Text layer. Right click on the layer and choose Create Clipping Mask.

Step 4

Add a Gradient Map by clicking on theCreate new fill or adjustment layerbutton at the bottom of theLayerspanel. Right click on the adjustment layer and chooseCreate Clipping Mask.

Step 5

Change theGradient Mapcolor tones: (color #bcbcbc, location 30%), (color #868981, location 53%), (color #cf3854, location 73%), and (color #94274e, location 91%).

Step 6

If you use the Color Overlaylayer style, you can easily change the color of the vintage text.

6.Create the Metal Bolts

Step 1

Create a new layer and use the Brush Tool and a hard round brush to paint a dot in each corner of the metal sign.

Step 2

Add this layer style to the Metal Bolts layer: Fill Opacity 0%, Drop Shadow (color #000000), Inner Shadow (color #000000), Outer Glow (color #ffffff), Inner Glow (color #ffffff), Bevel and Emboss (color #ffffff and #000000).

7.Lighting Adjustments

Step 1

Create a new layer and add theOld Plaster Wallon this layer. Set the blend mode to Multiplyand add a Gradient Overlay(color #030201 and color #ffffff) layer style.

Step 2

Add a Gradient Map adjustment layer above theOld Plaster Wallsecond layer. The colors for the gradient are #9e8b7awith location 12% and #ffffffwith location 100%.

Right click and choose Create Clipping Mask.
