Apple quietly releases indoor mapping app in quest to plot out the world

Apple wants to map everything, and it's increasingly turning to crowdsourcing to do so.

The company quietly launched a new app, Indoor Positioning, in the iOS App Store on Oct. 27, ostensibly designed for business owners to map their venues for inclusion in Apple Maps, Apple Insider pointed out

While the app is available in the App Store, it can't be found with search — only via a direct link. It's also not listed under Apple's collection of apps it has developed.

In October 2014, Apple launched Maps Connect, a service for small businesses to list and manage their information on Apple Maps. With the launch of that service, Apple offered indoor positioning to larger businesses, but only those with Wi-Fi available throughout and detailed maps. Read more...
