Winter Olympics Photo of the Day: A Snowboarder's Need for Speed

Snowboarding is back in the spotlight at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Wednesday's Photo of the Day puts the focus on Russia's Alena Zavarzina as she races to the finish line in the women's snowboarding parallel giant slalom semifinals.

The dramatic shot was taken by Getty Images staff photographer Mike Ehrmann at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park. The image makes use of a couple different techniques to capture the moment.

"The bright colors of the snowboarder are a strong contrast to the fresh layer of snow that fell over night," Ehrmann said. "The longer shutter speed gives a better feel for the high speed at which Alena Zavarzina is traveling down the course and the lens flare from the sun back lighting adds to the artistic drama."
