The Complete Guide to Whats New in Adobe Photoshop Elements 12

Photoshop Elements is a powerful image editing application from Adobe that delivers many of the same features that you may recognize from Adobe Photoshop CC, in an easy-to-use, and friendly interface that is perfect for amateur image editors and photographers. Adobe Photoshop Elements is not part of the Creative Cloud and is available at a much lower cost. Recently, Adobe announced version 12, the newest version of Adobe Photoshop Elements. In this article, we will take a look at all of the new features that you can expect to see in the latest version of Adobe’s consumer-level editing application. Let’s take a look!

1. Quick and Guided Edit Mode

Effects, Textures and Frames in Quick Edit Mode

Photoshop Elements 12 includes three new panels in Quick Edit mode, in addition to basic Adjustments. These new panels are called Effects, Textures, and Frames. You can find these panels next to the Adjustments panel. Each of these panels have 10 thumbnails; a single-click on one of the thumbnails will apply an edit to your image. The names for these effects, textures and frames are displayed in a tooltip on mouse hover.

Restore Old Photo in Guided Edit

Photographs, over time, may get damaged due to the effects of the weather, paper quality, or neglect. After digitization of a damaged photograph, various tools can be used to restore the image to remove cracks, discoloration, smudges, or other imperfections. The Restore Old Picture guided edit takes you through a step-by-step process, and presents you with all the tools you need to restore an image in one workflow.

Zoom Burst in Guided Edit

The Zoom Burst effect creates the illusion of motion, with attention drawn to the central object of your photograph. This effect can generally be produced manually in a camera by zooming in on an object, while the shutter is open. You can now digitally replicate this photographic effect in Photoshop Elements 12 using the new Zoom Burst Guided Edit.

Puzzle Effect in Guided Edit

This new Guided Edit creates the visual effect of a photograph being created by putting together pieces of a puzzle. With the Puzzle Effect Guided Edit, you can extract a few pieces of the puzzle from their slots, and move them around to simulate the feel of an unfinished puzzle.

2. Expert Edit Mode

Auto Smart Tone in Expert Mode

The Auto Smart Tone feature uses a smart algorithm to modify the tonal value of your image. In addition to this, you have a joystick control that you can move around on the image to fine-tune the results.

Auto Fill Edges for the Straighten Tool

In Photoshop Elements 12, the Straighten tool has been enhanced. You can now automatically fill the edges with relevant image data intelligently, instead of filling the background color. This feature is based on the popular Content Aware Fill technology introduced in an earlier version of Photoshop.

Pet Eye Option for the Red Eye Removal Tool

The red-eye removal tool enables you to remove the reddish glow in the eyes, due to reflection of light (resulting from low ambient light or the use of a flash). For animals, the eyes glow white, green, red, or yellow, and the often-used red-eye removal tools may
not fix the effect correctly. The new Pet Eye checkbox is available in the Red Eye Removal Tool options area and can effectively restore the eyes of animals in photos.

Content Aware Move Tool

The Content-aware Move tool allows you to select and move a part of a picture. The image is recomposed and the hole left behind is filled using matching elements from the picture. With Content Aware Move, you do not need to carry out intensive edits involving layers and complex selections.

3. Revel Integration, Camera RAW, and Greeting Cards

Print Greeting Cards

This new version of Photoshop Elements introduces a much-requested enhancement – the ability to print a foldable greeting card on a local printer. You can select from lots of useful templates and you only have to drag and drop your photos into them.

Open Files in Adobe Camera RAW

From this version of Photoshop Elements, you can open supported image formats as raw images from within the Photoshop Elements Editor (File > Open in Camera Raw). You can open formats like PSD, JPEG, TIFF, or camera raw directly in the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) dialog, where you can edit your images. After editing you will be able to open the image back in Photoshop Elements, or you can save the edited image directly from ACR dialog.

Revel Integration

From this new version of Photoshop Elements, you can upload albums to Adobe Revel via Elements Organizer. You need an Adobe ID to sign-in, mark your albums, and then you can access them anywhere through Revel.

4. Adobe Elements Organizer

Places Stack View in the Organizer

In Photoshop Elements 12 there is a new view for GPS-tagged media, where your images will be grouped together based on their geographic proximity. These will be represented as stacks in the Places view. Don’t worry if your camera doesn’t record GPS metadata as you can also manually drag and drop your photos onto the map.

Edit IPTC Metadata of Multiple files

While working with your images on different tools, photographs acquire a lot of metadata. In previous versions of Photoshop Elements, you could remove or edit the IPTC metadata of only one file at a time. Now you can amend IPTC metadata from more than one file at the same time with a single click.

Enhanced Visual Search with Object Search in Organizer

In Photoshop Elements 12, visual searches and object-based searches generate better and more specific results. In object search results, the rectangles are better placed. To perform a visual search, in the Search box, select Object Search, and then mark the object that you want to search in other photos. The color and shape of the object that you have marked is searched across the available photographs.
