Engineers seek a cheaper biodegradable polymer.
Nearly all the plastics sold today come from petroleum and arent biodegradable. But researchers at Metabolix in Cambridge, Massachusetts, are genetically engineering switchgrass to produce a biodegradable polymer that can be extracted directly from the plant.
