What You Need to Create a Polaroid Frame
1. How to Create a Frame in InDesign
For this tutorial, we're going to focus on the Polaroid design template. Open InDesign and create a new document using the dimensions 7 in Width x 5 in Height. Create a square and a rectangle using the Rectangle Tool (M). For the rectangle, change the color to Black 10% Tint. Use these dimensions for the shapes:
- Large rectangle: 2.9 in (W) x 3.6 (H)
- Small square: 2.5 in (W) x 2.6 (H)
2. How to Apply Effects to a Polaroid Frame
Step 1
Select the large rectangle and add a Drop Shadow by going to Object > Effects > Drop Shadow. Use these settings:
- Blending Mode: Multiply | Black swatch
- Opacity: 16%
- Distance: 0.0091 in
- Angle: 135°
- X & Y Offset: 0.0064 in
- Size 0.0492 in
Step 2
Add an Inner Glow effect. Use these settings:
- Blending Mode: Normal | Paper swatch
- Opacity: 100%
- Technique: Softer
- Source: Edge
- Size: 0.0911 in
- Noise: 0%
- Choke: 31%
Step 3
Add a Bevel and Emboss effect. Use these settings:
- Style: Inner Bevel
- Size: 0.0164 in
- Technique: Smooth
- Soften: 0.0456 in
- Direction: Up
- Depth: 100%
- Angle: 132°
- Altitude: 39
- Highlight: Screen | Paper swatch | Opacity: 47%
- Shadow: Multiply | Black swatch | Opacity: 39%
Step 4
Add an Outer Glow to the black square. Use these settings:
- Blending Mode: Normal | Paper swatch | Opacity 75%
- Technique: Softer
- Noise: 0%
- Size: 0.0911 in
- Spread: 25%
3. How to Place Photos in a Polaroid Frame
Step 1
Open the proposed couple photo in Adobe Photoshop. Change the image to CMYK by going to Image > Mode > CMYK Color. Make sure the image has a Resolution of 300 by going to Image > Image Size. Change the Resolution to 300 and make sure Resample is unchecked. Save this file as a TIFF. Apply these same settings to the other photo. Go back to InDesign and select the black square. File > Place the TIFF into the black square. Resize the image to 60%.
Step 2
Install the PAT file from the Black12 pattern folder in Adobe Photoshop. To install the pattern, go to Window > Patterns to open the Pattern panel. Select the hamburger menu, click Import Patterns, and select the PAT file.
Create a new document in Photoshop. Go to File > New and create a 6 x 6 in, 300 Resolution, CMYK document. Drag and drop the pattern onto the document. Double-Click the pattern thumbnail in the Layers panel and change the Scale to 23%. Save this file as a transparent TIFF. Go back to InDesign and File > Place the pattern TIFF file. Change this layer's Opacity to 6%.
