What the heck are a11y, i18n, and l10n anyways?

Weve been hearing a lot of terms like a11y, i18n, and l10n lately But what do they really mean?

What is a11y?

So in case you didnt know, a11y stands for accessibility. Yeah thats it!

But how does a11y translate into the word accessibility? Well, if you only took the first and last letters, and counted every letter in between, a11y is what youd get!

What is i18n?

Just like a11y, i18n is a numeronym. It stands for internationalization.

Internationalization is the process of adapting your website to different countries and languages. It might also involve changing things like currencies, timezones, and features based on the users location. In short, its a very common practice in professional web development!

What is l10n?

And finally, l10n means localization. Theres often a confusion about the difference between localization (l10n) and internationalization (i18n), but to put it simply, localization is the use of the technology offered by internationalization.
