How to Make a Bakery Brochure ( Ideas for Menu Designs)

In this tutorial, I'll teach you how to create a bakery brochure template in Adobe InDesign. You'll learn how to use the Pathfinder tool to subtract shapes and the Text Wrap tool to wrap text around images. As a bonus, I'll teach you how to create a simple vector donut icon in Adobe Illustrator.

1. How to Create a Vector Donut in Illustrator

Step 1

Open Illustrator and create a new document (File > New) with dimensions of 5 x 5 in, CMYK, and 300 dpi.

Select the Ellipse Tool (L) and make a circle that's 4 in in diameter. Fill this circle with the color brown (C30 M50 Y75 K9).

Step 2

Apply a dark brown Stroke to this circle (C39 M64 Y88 K35). Once you've applied the Stroke, go to Object > Expand Appearance. 

Step 3

Now we will create the icing on the donut. Select the Pen Tool (P) and place a point on the donut. Create another point by clicking and dragging your mouse to create a curve. Change the color of the icing to C0 M94 Y21 K0.

Step 4

Select the icing you just created and copy it (Command-C). Then, Edit > Paste in Place. Remove the fill and add a dark brown outline (C39 M64 Y88 K35).

Step 5

Before we move on to the sprinkles, let's create the donut hole. Select the Ellipse Tool (L) and create a circle with a diameter of 1.5 in. Place this circle on top of the pink icing. In my example, the donut hole is yellow, but you can make it any color.

Step 6

Copy (Command-C) the donut hole. We will use this later. Select the yellow donut hole, the pink icing, and the brown donut. Go to your Pathfinder panel and select Trim. Double-click the yellow donut hole and press Delete to get rid of it.

Step 7

Go to the Layers panel and expand Layer 1. Select the <path> layer and move it above the icing layer.

Step 8

Remember when I told you to copy the donut hole? Now we will Edit > Paste in Place. Your donut hole should appear. Remove the fill and add a dark brown outline (C39 M64 Y88 K35).

Step 9

Time to add sprinkles! Use the Pen Tool (P) and create various sprinkles across your donut. Use a 10pt Stroke and these two colors (C0 M49 Y98 K0 and C74 M98 Y1 K0) for your sprinkles.

Step 10

We will now add some shadows to our donut. Grab your Pen Tool (P) and create a shadow underneath the donut hole. Move this layer in the Layers panel to go below the donut hole stroke layer. Change the color of this shadow to C17 M100 Y39 K1.

Step 11

Add another shadow (C36 M60 Y80 K23) and move the layer below the pink icing layer. Save this file as Donut.eps.

Step 12

Save this file again (File > Save As) but save it as DonutOutline.eps. We will now create an outline of this donut to use on the inside of the bakery brochure. Select the sprinkles and turn them white (C0 M0 Y0 K0) in the Swatches panel. Select the pink icing and Delete it. Select the light brown donut and shadows and Delete them. Turn the dark brown outlines to white. Your image should look like the one below.

Note: I added a background behind my donut so that you can see my white outlines. Your donut should not have a background.

2. How to Create a Cake Catalog Design in InDesign

Step 1

Create a new document in InDesign File > New > Document. Make the brochure 11 x 8.5 in, 2 Pages, 0.5 in Margins, and 0.125 in Bleed.

Make sure your Rulers are visible. If not, Command-R or View > Show Rulers. Take your mouse and drag it from the left ruler onto the first page. The X Location for this guide should be 5.5 in. Do the same for the second page. By doing this, we will know where our cake shop brochure template will fold.

Step 2

Select the Rectangle Tool (M) and create a vertical rectangle on the cover. The size of my rectangle is 4.5581 x 8.75 in. This is where we will place our bakery shop photo.

Grab the Ellipse Tool (L) and make a circle. The diameter of my circle is 3.2456 in. Make the circle overlap the vertical rectangle like the image below. Select the circle and rectangle. Go to the Pathfinder panel and Subtract the circle from the rectangle.

Step 3

Open the Donut Bar photo in Photoshop. Go to Image > Mode > CMYK Color. When working with print files, you need to change the color mode to CMYK. Now go to Image > Image Size. Change the Resolution to 300 and make sure Resample is unchecked. Select OK. Save the file (File > Save As) as a Tiff.

Step 4

Go back to InDesign. Select the rectangle with the semicircle cutout and copy it  (Command-C). Then, go to File > Place or Command-D and select the Donut Bar Tiff file we just saved. Double-click inside the rectangle and resize the photo to 67%.

Step 5

Go to Edit > Paste in Place. Now apply a Gradient Feather effect by selecting the fx icon in the top toolbar.

Step 6

Change the Transparency to Multiply.

Step 7

Select the Rectangle Tool (M) and cover the entire background. Create a new swatch and Fill this shape with C44 M0 Y10 K9 in the Swatches panel. Move it behind the Donut Bar photo by right-clicking > Arrange > Send to Back.

Step 8

File > Place the Donut.eps file and place it within the semicircle. Grab the Ellipse Tool (L) and make a circle that's larger than the vector donut. Make sure the Fill and Stroke swatch is set to None.

Step 9

Select the Type on a Path Tool (Shift-T) and hover over the circle path until you see a small plus sign. Type the word "Glazed". Highlight this word and change the font to BoldenVan, 32pt, and Paper swatch.

Step 10

Grab the Selection Tool (V) and copy (Command-C) the Glazed text layer. Then, Edit > Paste in Place, hover over the right corner, and rotate this second text layer so that it's at the bottom. Find this small point (circled in red below) on the path, and click and drag your mouse to the inside of the circle path. 

Note: I changed my background to black so that you can easily see the point circled in red. Keep your background the same teal color we used earlier.

Step 11

Change this text layer to 'Confused'. Increase the size of this frame to 125% and change the font size to 32 pt with a Tracking of 150 pt.

Step 12

Duplicate the "Confused" text path, make it larger, and place it below the "Confused" layer. Use the Visby Regular font and a size of 10 pt.

Step 13

Select the Type Tool (T), create a text frame, and type "&" in the donut hole using these font settings.

Step 14

Now that we're done with our bakery brochure cover, let's jump to the inside. Select the Rectangle Tool (M) and make a rectangle in the upper left corner. The size of my rectangle is 7.9519 x 4.705 in.

Before you place the Donut Shop photo, open it in Photoshop and convert it to CMYK, 300 dpi, and save it as a Tiff. With the rectangle in InDesign selected, Command-D and place the Donut Shop Tiff file.

Create another rectangle next to this photo and place the Display Case of Desserts Tiff file in this rectangle. The size of my rectangle is 3.2981 x 4.705 in.

Step 15

Create another rectangle that's 3.2981 x 4.705 in and Place it on top of our desserts photo. Create a new swatch and fill it with C79 M91 Y10 K13. Change the Opacity to 80% in the top toolbar.

Step 16

Select the Rectangle Tool (M) and cover the bottom half of our cake shop brochure design with the color C44 M0 Y10 K9 from the Swatches panel. Command-D and select the DonutOutline.eps file and place it over the purple and teal background. Change the Opacity to 35%. Apply a Gradient Feather as well.

Step 17

Select the Type Tool (T) and create a text box with open quotation marks on the purple overlay. Use the Pen Tool (P) and create a box that starts from the right side of the quotation marks all the way around to the bottom. Apply these settings:

Make another text box and insert your testimonial using Visby CF Regular Oblique and use these settings:

• Testimonial: 17pt, Paper swatch


• Name: 11pt, Paper swatch

Step 19

Add another text box and add your heading and body copy using these settings:

• Header: Visby CF Extra Bold, 45pt, Paper swatch


• Body Copy: Visby CF Regular, 8pt, C79 M53 Y10 K64 swatch

Add a Drop Cap to the first paragraph.

Step 20

Select the Ellipse Tool (L) and make two circles that overlap each other. The large circle has a diameter of 2.0858 in, and the smaller circle is 1.5385 in. Place the Bakery Dough and Cakes on a Table photo inside the two circles. Remember to convert the images to CMYK, 300 dpi, and save them as a Tiff file in Photoshop before you place them in InDesign.

Step 21

Apply a Drop Shadow and Text Wrap to the circles.

• Drop Shadow - Mode: Multiply, Opacity: 20%, Angle: 135°, Size: 0.1875 in
  


• Text Wrap - 0.25 in, Wrap Around Object Shape
  

Step 22

Select the Ellipse Tool (L) and create an oval for our 'Most Popular' header. Make sure the Fill and Stroke are set to None. Use the Type on a Path Tool (Shift-T) and type out "Most Popular" using Visby CF Extra Bold, 14pt, Paper swatch, and 90 Tracking. 

Create three more text boxes and list your products and prices using these settings:

• Product name: Visby CF Extra Bold, 8.5pt, C79, M53, Y10, K64 swatch


• Product description: Visby CF Regular Oblique, 8pt, C79, M53, Y10, K64 swatch


• Product price: Visby CF Extra Bold Oblique, 8pt, C79, M53, Y10, K64 swatch

Step 23

Use the Ellipse Tool (L) and create three circles, 0.6752 in in diameter and fill them using the C79 M91 Y10 K13 purple swatch. Place each one to the right of each product description.

Create three more circles (0.7705 in), turn the Fill to None, and use a 2 pt Dotted Stroke using the Paper swatch. Use the Pen Tool (P) and create a straight line beneath each product description using a 2 pt Dotted Stroke.

Step 24

Open the 30 Vector icons file in Illustrator and copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) the icons into InDesign. Add a new orange color swatch C0 M49 Y98 K0.

Step 25

In the upper left corner, select the Ellipse Tool (L) and create two circles using these settings:

• Small circle: 1.2034 in, 5pt, Solid Stroke, Paper swatch


• Large circle 1.7777 in, 4pt, Solid Stroke, Paper swatch

Then, copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) the chef's hat icon from Illustrator to InDesign. Change the color of this icon to Paper. Grab the Ellipse Tool (L) again and make sure the Fill and Stroke are set to None. Select the Type on a Path Tool (Shift-T), hover over the circle path until you see a small plus sign, and type out your text using these settings:

  Visby CF Extra Bold, 14pt, 50 Tracking, Paper swatch

Step 26

Using the Pen Tool (P), create two small ribbons with a 4 pt Paper Stroke to go on each side of the badge. We're now done with the inside of our cake brochure template. Let's finish the back side.

Step 27

Select the Type Tool (T) and type out the words you want to use for the monogram pattern. For this bakery brochure tutorial, I'm using "sweet. yummy. delicious. mouthwatering." Move this layer beneath the cover photo (Command-[). Use these settings:

• 
  BoldenVan Regular, 10 pt, 59 pt Leading, 15% Opacity

Step 28

Using the Type Tool (T), add the slogan, donation, and store location information to the brochure. Use these settings:

• Slogan text: Visby CF Extra Bold, 17 pt, C79 M53 Y10 K64
  


• Donation text: Visby CF Extra Bold and Regular, 9 pt, C79 M53 Y10 K64
  


• Find Us text: Visby CF Extra Bold, 13 pt, C79 M53 Y10 K64
  


• Store location text: Visby CF Extra Bold and Regular, 9 pt, Paper swatch

Step 29

Select the Pen Tool (P) and make a heart-shaped icon. Use the Rectangle Tool (M) and add a 2 pt dotted outline around the donation text and Fill it with C44 M0 Y10 K9. Move this layer below the donation text layer. Copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) the icing piping bag and rolling pin icon from Illustrator into InDesign.
