Well this makes perfect sense.
According to Apple, the most popular emoji for U.S. English speakers is ... 😂 ! The emoji is officially called "Face With Tears of Joy," although it's also known as the "laugh/cry" emoji, which is clearly the appropriate response to 2017.

The next two most popular emoji (trailing well behind 😂 ) are the red heart ❤️ and "loudly crying" 😭 — it also me.

Apple revealed the news in a report about how they anonymously collect user data for insights into iPhone usage and potential problems, via The Verge.
