How to Create an Iridescent Snake-Textured Text Effect in Adobe Photoshop

What You'll Be Creating

In this quick tip, we are going to create a simple Layer Style text effect, similar to the text effects that can be purchased onEnvato Market. We'll be using a bunch of textures, a pattern, and a couple of layer effects to create a snake-textured text effect. Let's get started!



Tutorial Assets


The following assets were used during the production of this tutorial:





1. Create the Background Gradient



Step 1



Create a new 800 x 600px document, and duplicate the Background layer.

Step 2



Double-click the Background copy layer to apply a Gradient Overlay effect using the following settings:




  • Check the Dither box

  • Scale: 150%

  • Use the gradient fill below

This will add the background's gradient.

2. Add the Textures



Step 1



Place the Texture 42 image on top of the Background copy layer, and then change its layer's Blend Mode to Soft Lightand its Opacity to 75%.

Add the Texture 630 image, and change its layer's Blend Mode to Soft Light.

Step 3



Add image6 (2)from the Premium Blur Backgrounds bundle, and change its layer's Blend Mode to Multiply.

Step 4



Add image 9 from the Premium Blur Backgrounds bundle, and then change its layer's Blend Mode to Colorand its Opacity to 20%.

3. Create and Style the Text



Step 1



Create the text using the font Ballpark Weiner, and place its layer below image 9's layer. The Color is #7bb6cf, and the Size is 150 pt.

Double-clickthe text layer to apply the following layer style:

Add a Bevel and Emboss with these settings:



  • Size: 10

  • Uncheck the Use Global Light box

  • Angle: 11

  • Altitude: 64

  • Gloss Contour: Cone - Inverted

  • Check the Anti-aliased box

  • Highlight Mode: Vivid Light

  • Opacity: 75%

  • Shadow Mode:

  • Color: #474747

  • Opacity: 75%



Bevel and Emboss


Step 3



Add a Contour with these settings:



  • Contour: Guassian - Inverse

  • Check the Anti-aliased box

  • Range: 65%

Add a Texture with these settings:



  • Pattern: Rubber grip

Step 5



Add an Inner Shadow with these settings:



  • Color: #2a84a9

  • Distance: 0

  • Size: 5

Add an Inner Glow with these settings:



  • Blend Mode: Linear Light

  • Opacity: 44%

  • Noise: 50%

  • Color: Use the drum 10gradient fill

  • Source: Center

  • Size: 21

  • Contour: Cone - Shallow

Add a Satin with these settings:



  • Blend Mode: Linear Light

  • Color: #fff1c0

  • Opacity: 25%

  • Angle: 7

  • Distance: 108

  • Size: 35

  • Contour: Ring - Triple

  • Check the Anti-aliased box

  • Check the Invert box

Add a Gradient Overlay with these settings:



  • Blend Mode: Overlay

  • Opacity: 42%

  • Use the gradient fill below

Add a Pattern Overlay with these settings:



  • Blend Mode: Soft Light

  • Pattern:Nebula

Add a Drop Shadow with these settings:



  • Color: #1b1635

  • Opacity: 100%

  • Distance: 7

  • Size: 10

Congratulations! You're Done

In this quick tip, we used a simple gradient and a bunch of textures to create the background. Then, we created some text and styled it with many different effects to create the snake-textured look.
