Uber may (or may not) have ordered $9.6 billion worth of Mercedes S-Class sedans

We knew Uber would make an order for autonomous cars at some point; it's inevitable. However, the idea that it just ordered $9.6 billion worth of Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedans is insane.

A recent Reuters report cites a story from German business magazine Manager Magazin that, according to sources at both companies, Uber has reportedly ordered 100,000 Mercedes S-Class sedans.

Here in the U.S., the base S-Class retails for just shy of $96,000. Presuming Mercedes didn't give Uber a deep, deep discount for a bulk buy, that adds up to $9.6 billion. And although Uber is valued at $62 billion, it's unlikely it has the means to cut such a check. Read more...
