How 'Furious' director Justin Lin is helping Google put a movie theater in your pocket

SAN FRANCISCO — For the last two years at Google I/O, the company has unveiled a new short film to go along with a piece of technology showcased at its annual developer conference. But unlike typical shorts, each "Spotlight Story" is an immersive 360-degree video.

In previous years, the films were animated and exclusive to specific devices being showcased at I/O, like the Moto X and Moto G smartphone. This year, Google took its Spotlight Stories to a new level with a live-action short from Fast and Furious director Justin LinHelp, the result of a collaboration between Lin and Google's ATAP, took two years to create.
