Skit!, an animated video app in the same general category as Bitstrips, the cartoon-making app whichrecently scored $3 millionin Series A funding, is coming to Android. Like Bitstrips, Skit!is also focused on letting users create characters, and share stories to social networks like Facebook, Twitter or YouTube. But it’s not about making comic strips – instead, it lets you build stories using your own photos which you enhance with drawings, animated text, visual fx, voiceovers, and photos that move. We first spotted the app inTechCrunch Disrupt NY’s Startup Alleylast year, shortly after its launch. The company at the time explained that while the app itself aims to be a fund way to produce fun, little animated movies, the business would involve sponsored product placements. Last fall, the company made further moves on that front,with a tie-up to Pacific Rim, which let you add characters from the movie into your own creations. The company, started by 10-year gaming veteran andformer Electronic Arts animation technical director Robin Johnson, and the co-founder of Xfire (sold to MTV/Viacom for $102 million) Max Woon, extends the idea of mini videos, like those found today in apps like Vine and Instagram. Its mini movies can be used for mobile animated cards (like a mobile version of Jib Jab, for example), or just for fun. Included in the app are hundreds of free stickers, props and characters, so you have a lot of room to create without being nickel-and-dimed along the way. This new release includes a set of backgrounds, card templates and other items designed for Valentine’s Day, too. After your video is shared, others can edit the story anyway they choose, which is different from most video creation apps. As for the Bitstrips comparison, it seems the company isn’t thrilled about its competitors’ success, as they sent us this: But they could do worse than becoming the next Bitstrips. Skit! hasn’t really become a breakout hit on iOS so far, according to data from App Annie, which sees it sinking in the charts: Bitstrips, meanwhile, is still on a tear: Skit! for Android is available now in Google Play, here.
