The 2014 Academy Awards may represent one of the most crowded fields for quality film making in recent memory.

There are so many good movies and a lot of moving and memorable performances, from the enchanting Frozen to to Matthew McConaughey's stunning turn in The Dallas Buyer's Club. At least The Motion Picture Academy casts a wider net with nine Best Picture nominations. The rest of the categories, however, are stuck at five.

Whatever you did or didn't see in 2013, Thursday's brief nominations presentation in Hollywood represents the official kick-off of the Oscars Awards season.
