'New York Times' Develops Interactive Documentary Series for Tablets

The New York Times is going tablet-first — at least for one new series.

The Times will debut a four-part documentary series about residential highrise buildings at the New York Film Festival on Sept. 30 in partnership with the National Film Board of Canada, and then publish it on the Times' website in October. Rather than simply throw up some videos, the Times has designed the series to be interactive with an eye specifically to the tablet experience.

"With this project, we definitely took an approach of trying to do tablet first," Jacqueline Myint, a Times interactive art developer who developed the series, told Mashable. Myint designed the documentary experience to take advantage of touch gestures common on tablets, including dragging, pulling and tapping to interact with the video.
