'Chime' Instrument Turns City Sounds Into Musical Compositions

Horns honking, engines running and construction clanging — the urban jungle's daily noises can be hard on the ears, and easy to ignore

But Marc De Pape, a self-described "creative technologist" based in Toronto, is encouraging urbanites to tune back in by turning these city sounds into music

De Pape achieves this through his creation, an instrument inspired by wind chimes called "The Chime." A collection of 18 sensors that measures 27 data points (through microphones and thermometers, among other tools), it "translate[s] the impulses and flows of everyday city into sound," De Pape said on his website
