Under the Hood of the Worlds Smallest, Cheapest Computer


Computers are big, expensive gadgets, but they don't need to be.

In 2006, several members of the Cambridge faculty and other UK computer scientists joined together to form the charitable Raspberry Pi Foundation with one simple goal: get more computers into the hands of more children. They knew they'd need to create low-cost, programmable devices and aimed to meet a $25 price point per unit, which is roughly the cost of one textbook.

Six years later, in 2012, the credit card-sized computer was put on the market. The fully functional, programmable, low-cost computer retails for $25 or $35, depending on the model. Many say its simplistic design could get us back to our computer programm…
