Adobe Announces First Creative Cloud Update to Photoshop CS6; Adds Retina Display Support

One of the most exciting things about the Adobe Creative Cloud is Adobe’s ability to quickly roll out new products and features. When the Adobe Creative Cloud and Creative Suite 6 was released back in April of 2012, we were promised that they would release new features at a much quicker pace. Today, Adobe made good on that promise and released several updates to Photoshop CS6, in an update otherwise known as Photoshop 13.1.

Retina Display Support

One of the biggest complaints about Apple’s new retina display is that many apps don’t support it. Lots of designers using Photoshop on retina displays complain about the blurry, pixelated UI. So one of the most exciting updates in Photoshop 13.1 is support for retina displays. Users working on a retina display will now see much a much higher resolution UI. In this video, Josh Johnson will show you the difference.

Editor’s note: While most of the features in this update will only be available to Creative Cloud subscribers, the retina display update is being released to all Photoshop CS6 customers.

Copy CSS to Clipboard and Import Swatches From CSS

Photoshop 13.1 now includes the ability to copy CSS information directly from Photoshop and then paste it directly into your CSS documents. It also gives you the ability to import swatches directly from an existing CSS document so that you can use it in your artwork. In this tutorial, Josh Johnson will explain.

Refinements to the Crop Tool

When Photoshop CS6 was released, many users complained about how the new Crop Tool worked. In Photoshop 13.1, Adobe made some adjustments to the Crop Tool that they hope will alleviate some of those users’ concerns. In this tutorial, Martin Perhiniak and Psdtuts+ Editor, Grant Friedman will explain some of these options which include Crop to W & H Resolution, UI enhancements, and the resurrection of the Crop to Front Image option which had originally been removed from the previous version of Photoshop CS6.

Blur Gallery and Liquify Smart Object Support

The new update to Photoshop CS6 adds smart object support for the Blur Gallery, as well as the Liquify Tool. This means you can now convert your layers to smart objects and then edit them non-destructively. In this tutorial, Martin Perhinak will explain.

Conditional Actions

Photoshop 13.1 includes the ability to create Conditional Actions. This means that you can now create actions that are optimized for certain situations. For instance, you could create a conditional action to create a watermark for either a landscape or portrait photograph. Martin Perhiniak will explain.

Default Type Styles

In Photoshop CS6, Adobe gave us the ability to create paragraph and character styles that we can apply to documents heavy in text. In 13.1, they added support for Default Type Styles. You can now import styles directly from other PSD files and use them as default for all new documents. Martin Perhiniak will explain.

Improved 3D Functionality

Adobe made some rather significant changes to its 3D features in Photoshop CS6. In 13.1, they have made a handful of tweaks that you should be aware of. These new features include a way to generate bump map textures from flat artwork, using the Normals menu; smoother previewing of soft shadows; full-image ray tracing, replacing the earlier block-by-block approach; and always-on Image Based Lighting. Steve Caplin will explain.

Note: Adobe updated the system requirements necessary to use the 3D features in Photoshop 13.1. This means that if you upgrade to this version and are running less than 512 MB of video memory (vRAM) that the 3D features will be disabled on your machine.

Minor Tweaks

In Photoshop 13.1, Adobe made some minor tweaks to the Pen Tool as well as the Layer Panel. You can now adjust an anchor point of a path by holding down the spacebar. In addition, the Layer Panel has also been improved so when you merge several layers, the merged layer will now take on the name you’ve given to that layer as opposed to just giving it the same name as the topmost layer. Martin Perhiniak will explain.

How to Get This Update

To get this update, customers can follow the following instructions.

  1. In Photoshop, choose Help > Updates
  2. The Adobe Application Manager will launch. Select Adobe Photoshop or and choose “Update.”
