What Is Adobe Firefly?

In the digital age, the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized how designers can create and manipulate their designs. AI tools such as Adobe Firefly make it somewhat easier for designers to quickly generate visuals with minimal effort. This article will discuss what Adobe Firefly is, how to get Adobe Firefly, and how to use Adobe Firefly effectively to maximize its potential.

What Is Adobe Firefly AI?

Adobe Firefly is a generative artificial intelligence tool that allows you to create visuals using various features like text to image, generative fill, text effects, and more.

How to Get Adobe Firefly AI

Currently there are two ways to use Adobe Firefly AI. First, you can access Adobe Firefly by visiting firefly.adobe.com. Here you can experiment with a variety of generative AI features from the website. Second, you can use the beta version of the app: Adobe has created a Photoshop Beta where you can alter images using generative fill, and as you can see, it’s not that accurate.

What Is the Adobe Firefly Cost?

If you want to use Adobe Firefly beta, either on the web or directly in Photoshop Beta, there is no additional cost. You only need to have an active Creative Cloud subscription. You'll need a subscription to use the web version and/or download Photoshop Beta.

How to Use Adobe Firefly

Step 1

If you're using Firefly on the web, click on text effects and type out what you want to create. For this example, I wanted to create the letter M inspired by The Little Mermaid. Click Generate.

Step 2

Go back to the previous screen and click on Generative Fill. Select one of the examples or upload your own image. Click on Background to remove the background. Type Northern Lights in the description box and click Generate.

Experiment with the options at the bottom to customize the image to your liking.

Adobe Firefly vs. Midjourney

Both Adobe Firefly beta and Midjourney are AI tools that generate visuals. But what are the main differences?

First, Adobe Firefly generative AI, as the name suggests, was created by Adobe. Only Creative Cloud users can access this tool. Adobe Firefly AI will eventually be available in more Adobe products. Currently, this works in Photoshop Beta, and Illustrator recently introduced the Generative Recolor beta function.

Midjourney is also an AI system that uses artificial intelligence to generate pictures from text descriptions. As of now, Midjourney is closed-sourced and self-funded. To use it, you'll need a Discord account. Midjourney isn't free either—you get 25 free prompts to start, and then you'll be required to sign up for a subscription.
