Little things lead to a big effect

This week I've been contributing to open source project telescope.

Little bug

The issue I noticed is that on the search page typography is different from the typography that is used on other pages of the website.

My suggestion was to be consistent and use the same text font all over across the website.

Here is how it looked before:

And here is how it looks now:

Looks more appealing, right ?

Why design matters

- First impression

Basically, the design of the website is the first thing we see once we visit any webpage. Studies say, that we need only 0.5 seconds to decide whether we will stay on the website or leave. Hence, please never neglect the web design.

- SEO

This will help search engine spiders craw and index the website correctly. If we want our website to get higher in the search results, we should consider practicing SEO-friendly code.

- Consistency

It's essential to have consistent design(e.g. font, color of the button, etc.). It shows the professionalism. For example, if CTA(Call-to-action) button on one page is blue and on another page it's orange, that gives a bad UX.

Some programmers are so picky

You never know what type of user is on the other side of the screen. What if it's a very picky person, perfectionist, trying to find bugs, and basically trying to break the system (in a good way of course).

Sure thing, there are regular users who just use the website as it should be used, but there are a lot of people who enjoy finding issues and improving the websites.

Little things are not little things

We should never underestimate little things. You might be surprised how little things could dramatically lead to something big.

Even though, the whole website may look perfect, one little bug could spoil user experience.

That brings us to an interesting point: we should never think of something as not important, because we all different and someone will find things important while others may not even notice your new feature that you have been working on for 6 months.

Users see your commitment

I think you can see when the website was built for 2 hours or for 2 months.

Whenever you visit a website, you can see how you want to be treated. I would say that web design is all about the psychology, because you need to know what influences people, what colors are better for your website audience, how to make user stay on the website and many more aspects.

Great way to test your website

Ask your friend or relative to open your website and look through it. You can ask their thoughts about the ease of use and get independent opinion.

I guarantee you will be surprised how people do things differently and what kind of experience they get on the website.
