Everything you need to know about Amazon Prime for Australia

Amazon Prime

Although it's been long enjoyed and fretted over across the globe, Australians had been anticipating the arrival of Amazon's Prime Day for quite some time — and now, it's officially part of the calendar.

Following the event's 2018 debut, Amazon is bringing Prime Day back to Australia, as part of its signature worldwide shopping marathon. Being ahead of the timezone, Aussie Prime members will get first access to some pretty epic deals.

Prime members get fast and free delivery, a range of entertainment options like Prime Video streaming, early access to content as well as tonnes of deals and events like the much-anticipated Prime Day. This is all provided through an annual or monthly subscription, which comes with a 30-day free trial, and after that costs $6.99 per month or $54 per year. So far, there’s more than 100 million paid members around the globe.

From July 12-14, Prime Day 2022 will offer thousands of products at discount prices across all categories including Alexa-enabled devices, fashion, video games, books, home, and more.

But, for Aussies possibly new to all this, what’s the big deal with Amazon Prime anyway, and what does this subscription actually offer? Let's break it down.

Fast and free delivery

If you’re a Prime customer, you’ll get free and super-fast delivery service on local items (two business days), as well as free standard international delivery (9-13 business days) on items shipped and sold by Amazon U.S. that collectively exceed $49 on amazon.com.au and the Amazon Global Store.

For some Aussies living in certain metropolitan areas, free ‘release-day’ delivery for games, music and books could also be on the cards. Keep in mind however that not all shipping speeds and options are available for all items and addresses. Free release-day delivery for example is only available in select areas where Amazon offers two-day expedited delivery.

Amazon's own streaming service

It’s not just the expedited shipping that has people excited — membership also grants subscribers access to a range of additional content services like Amazon Prime Video.

Prime Video features classic and current TV shows and films, as well as original content like Good Omens, Jack Ryan and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. And yes, you can stream in 4K if you have a compatible television.

One heck of an e-library

With a revolving selection of more than 1000 e-books, comics and short works, Amazon Prime Reading gives avid readers access to the best page-turners from around the globe. Best of all, you don’t need a Kindle to enjoy the service. Free Kindle apps for iOS and Android mean you can read your fave stories on any device, anywhere, anytime.

Amazon's game streaming service

For the gamers among us, Prime Gaming is Amazon’s game streaming service on the Twitch platform. It features ad-free streaming, a free channel subscription every month and access to free in-game loot and games that subscribers can keep forever. Winning!

So, what’s all this going to set you back?

Luckily there’s a free first month trial happening at the moment which includes free two-day domestic delivery, free standard international delivery on orders over $49 as well as Prime Video, Prime Reading and Twitch Prime. After that you’ll be looking at $54 a year or $6.99 per month.

Keen to sign up? Good timing. Prime Day runs July 12 to 14. Get amongst it.
