Tips for Writing Recipes Like a Professional

Cooking is an art full of creative inspiration. When you cook, you're telling a story. A story has three components: beginning, middle, end. Think of the recipe as a story you want to tell the world.

But first things first: Before you write down your recipe and send it into the world, you should test it thoroughly. Some recommend cooking it four or five times.

Know your audience: Who is the recipe for? Is it for people who are pressed for time? If so, you want to write a recipe that allows them to prepare fast meals.

Harness the power of presentation. Grab attention by feeding the eyes first. Do it with the way you present your food photos. Don't compromise on the quality of your photos.

Clarity: You want your audience to cook something edible and get the same results you achieved. If your recipe is not clear, then they may end up with something inedible.

Formatting a Recipe

Now let's look at elements of a complete recipe.

Recipe Title: A title is the first impression the reader has of your recipe. A title conveys what type of dish the recipe is for. Think of creative ways of giving your title some flavor to draw in your audience, but don't trick them.

Recipe Yield: This simply means the number of servings your recipe will produce. And serving sizes if appropriate.

Recipe Headnote: This is a short introductory note that says something about the recipe and helps readers connect with your experience. Think of it as the story of your recipe. So if you ate something at a restaurant that inspired the recipe, or scents of spices as you were walking by the food truck sparked favorite memories from your childhood, let readers know it. Also, in this section, be sure to give the reader an idea of what to expect and offer tips and suggestions about how to achieve the best results.

Ingredient List: This is the most important part. It tells the reader what ingredients are needed to recreate the recipe. Ingredients and their exact amounts should be listed on separate lines. The ingredients should be listed in chronological order of how they will appear in the cooking directions. Measurements should be clearly spelled out and not abbreviated: "ounces", "teaspoons", "tablespoons", and so on. List unique utensils, like cheesecloth. Also write down the sizes of utensils, for example a "9 x 9 inch pan" instead of a "medium-sized bowl".

Preparation Method or Directions: When writing the step-by-step directions the reader should follow while making the dish, make sure to give as much information as you can. It is better to provide a lot of information than very little information. How much information you give depends on the complexity of the dish. But be very precise, and get to the point. Avoid flowery language or using too many adjectives. Break up the preparation into stages, but not too many stages so as not to intimidate the reader. Directions should be structured in a form that is easy to follow. Break each step into paragraphs.

Nutritional Information: This includes information about calories, salt, sugar, fat, and nutrients.

Timing: Lets the readers know how much time it will take to prepare the dish and how long each stage of preparation takes. And if there is something that needs to be marinated for two days, then here is where you make it very clear to the reader!

Recipe Variation: Suggest different ways to prepare the same dish and alternative ingredients that can be used. It gives readers more ways of adapting the dish to their particular setting.

Recipe Notes: Here is where you share things like alternative ingredients, where to buy hard-to-find ingredients, what drinks pair well with the dish, storage, and reheating.

End your recipe with serving instructions: Let readers know how the dish should be served and at what temperature. Include information about how should leftovers be stored, in what types of containers, and at what temperatures.

Note: Recipe plugins have all these recipe components built into them, so you don't have to start writing them from scratch.
