Snapchat profiles will feature full-body 3D Bitmojis and backgrounds

Snapchat profiles are making Bitmoji more lifelike than ever.

Snapchat profiles are getting a full-body makeover.

Bitmojis have been a central feature of Snapchat profiles since 2017, when they became the default image within Snapcodes, the QR codes displayed on profiles that link to your personal profile.

Now, they're becoming more prominent than ever. Beginning Monday, Snapchat users will be able to feature 3D, full-body versions of their Bitmoji avatars on their profiles. Previously, Bitmojis on profiles were just heads and shoulders inside those Snapcodes. With the new design, users can choose different poses, like peace signs or 3/4 turns, and backgrounds like colorful wall paper or city scenes. The newest accessory for the Bitmoji fit? Earrings.

Snap acquired Bitmoji maker Bitstrips in 2016. Since then, Snapchat has integrated the customizable, animated avatars throughout the app. That includes games, wherein a user's Bitmoji is their game avatar, and a cartoon series, which featured each person's Bitmoji as the "star" of a TV show. It's also been an avenue for commerce: Snap has partnered with brands like Ralph Lauren to debut capsule collections. Users can dress their Bitmoji in designer threads, and even purchase corresponding garments (off the app) to wear in real life.

The profile glow up is interesting, though, considering that Snapchat has long de-emphasized the role of profiles in the app. That's been for the slightly philosophical reason that Snap wants users to communicate their authentic, in-the-moment selves, as opposed to the static and polished profile.

However, things have begun to change. Everyday users (as opposed to creators) were able to start making public profiles last year. On a user's profile, there is now a call to action to make a public profile to grow a following on Spotlight, Snap's TikTok-like portal featuring a never-ending stream of viral content. A more dynamic profile could entice creators to invest in using Spotlight by giving them a bigger launchpad to showcase their personalities (and perhaps, eventually, brand partnerships).

Business motivations aside, the new profile is cute. The full-body Bitmoji can be striding down a city street or busting a move on the dance floor. The multiple angles of the poses bring the lil' avatars to life. And while Snap has had full-body Bitmojis (and outfits) for a while, it says its "pixar-quality 3D" allows for enhanced details and textures. Snap's customization options are prolific, ranging from skin color (my Bitmoji's hue is a vibrant lavender) to body type and beyond.

The profile changes begin rolling out globally Monday. While you might not get the new look right away, you can get to your profile by clicking your Bitmoji in the top left corner of your screen. Then, scroll down to the "Bitmoji" section, where you can change your outfit, edit your Bitmoji, and even — of course — "Shop Bitmoji Merch."
