Editor’s note, April 21st, 2020: Donald Trump tweeted on April 20th that he would sign an executive order to temporarily suspend immigration to the US in response to the pandemic. It’s not yet clear how this would work or who would be affected if Trump follows through. But it’s an alarming threat given the president’s broad powers to regulate immigration and his previous moves to push through hard-line policies during the COVID-19 crisis. This piece was published before that tweet, but its points about the futility of using immigration policy to fight a virus are more relevant than ever.
