Eric Garner's killer will not be charged
U.S. prosecutors on Tuesday said they will not charge an N.Y.P.D. officer in the death of Eric Garner, whose final words, "I can't breathe," inspired national protests against the unpunished police killings of Black people in America.
So, nothing has changed.
They cited lack of evidence.
The Justice Department will tell the family of Mr. Garner, who was selling untaxed cigarettes at the time he died in a chokehold by NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo.
The officer appears quite plaingly to have strangled him to death using a banned chokehold maneuver, which cut off Garner's ability to breathe.
It's been five years. The only punishment Pantaleo received is being demoted to desk duty.
The person who captured video of the NYPD killing Eric Garner, Ramsey Orta, may face over 50 years in prison for filming a murder.
The man who did the killing walks free among us.
