This solar-powered machine transforms desert sand into glass sculptures

German designer Markus Kayser built his 'Solar Sinter' machine as a university project. He wanted to challenge how we approach the process of making things in a world dominated by shortages. 

The machine he made is solar powered and uses concentrated sun beams to melt sand into glass. He tested it out in the Sahara desert, where both natural resources are abundant.  Read more...
