Rumors of Pokémon Go’s death are greatly exaggerated

Walking along Jones Beach Boardwalk one sultry August night last week, I paused frequently to line up Pokémon and catch them as my niece, her boyfriend and my two college-age kids walking alongside me did the same (only my wife abstained). As we neared the flagpole at the entrance to the beach’s main field, we spotted a tight cluster of children, teens and adults all holding up their phones. They, too, were caching Pokémon at one of the beach’s handful of Pokestops. Among them was a small child who was crying to his father because he’d just missed catching a rare Pokémon.

A day later, as I descended a staircase at Penn Station in New York on my way home from work, I spotted a woman just ahead of me staring intently at her phone. The Pokémon Go map was clearly visible on her screen. Read more...
