Foxtel wants Pirate Bay blocked in Australia but doesn't want to pay for it

Australian cable company Foxtel and Roadshow Films want sites that allow Australians to pirate films and TV shows blocked, but they'd rather not pay for it.

Passed in 2015, the Copyright Amendment (Online Infringement) Bill allows copyright holders to apply for an injunction in Federal Court to have sites that facilitate piracy blocked in Australia. Foxtel and Roadshow were the first to bring cases, attempting to have Solar Movie, Pirate Bay, Torrentz, TorrentHound and IsoHunt blocked for Australian Internet users.

Their applications, heard Thursday and Friday in Sydney, will likely set a precedent for future site blocking attempts and the rights holders and Internet service providers (ISPs) battled over who should pay for site blocking and how it should be implemented. Read more...
