Inside the hidden world of prosthetic limb design

LONDON -- In a nondescript building on an average road in an anonymous part of north London lie dozens of arms, legs and feet. The dismembered limbs sit among nuts, bolts, feathers and cogs.

A wall of saws, hammers and drills stands opposite a freezer full of flesh-coloured material and the rubbery top half of a naked old woman hides behind a shelf.

The studio is the home of the Alternative Limb Project, the brainchild of prosthetic limb designer Sophie de Oliveira Barata. From this tiny space, she creates custom body parts -- jewelled lower legs adorned with speakers; realistic upper arms with snakes entwined; limbs with tiny cages, drawers and dragons -- a world away from standard prosthetics. More about Uk, Design, Tech, and Lifestyle
