If you're poor, now you can get a subsidy for Internet access

The Internet is now officially considered a necessary component of American society after a landmark move by the Federal Communications Commission to provide subsidies for broadband access for low-income Americans.

The FCC voted 3-2 on Thursday to pass a proposed expansion on the communications benefits program Lifeline for poor Americans. The new broadband benefit will provide $9.25 a month for broadband and voice services to Americans who already receive federal assistance

Lifeline’s broadband expansion will be available to about 40 million Americans and has a proposed budget of $2.25 billion a year. Read more...
