Hyundai's Ioniq comes in a trio of eco-friendly flavors: hybrid, plug-in and electric

NEW YORK — The new Hyundai Ioniq isn't just a shot across the bow of Prius, it's a challenge to the Prius, Volt and the LEAF. That's because you can get the specially designed car in one of three eco-friendly flavors: hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric.

When Hyundai set out to create the Ioniq, it didn't just add some batteries to an existing car. Instead, it created a new platform with the intention of making a trio of eco mobility machines from it.

Starting off, we have the Ioniq Hybrid, which is powered by a 1.6-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine that produces 104 horsepower and 109 pound-feet of torque. That engine is bolted to both a 6-speed "EcoShift" dual-clutch transmission and a 43-horsepower electric motor. All told the Hybrid makes 139 horsepower. Read more...
