What it's like to experience 'The Martian' in virtual reality

If virtual reality is going to reach a wide audience, it's going to need some killer content

One of the first pieces of VR content out of the gate will be the The Martian VR Experience, a roughly 20-minute game-like experience (although the studio is explicit in stating it's not supposed to be a game), based on the 2015 Matt Damon movie.

Basing a VR title on a successful motion picture isn't a terrible idea, but it's one that should be acted upon with caution, considering the checkered history of franchise tie-ins. But putting yourself in the shoes of marooned astronaut Mark Watney was a big part of the appeal of The Martian, the movie, and it provides an opportunity to create the rare virtual experience that's almost completely nonviolent.
