Streaming video, audio account for 70% of U.S. broadband usage

In case you ever doubted the dominance of streaming in the U.S, a new study will make you a believer.

Streaming audio and video account for 70.40% of downstream — or content downloaded to a local computer from a network — Internet traffic in the U.S., according to a study released Monday by networking hardware manufacturer Sandvine. Netflix alone accounts for 37.05% of that traffic.

Streaming content's dominance increased in 2015, improving on its 67.53% share of downstream broadband traffic in the second half of 2014. Netflix, which is the largest single source of downstream traffic by a significant margin, increased its lead over the 34.89% share it had last year. Read more...
