Google teaches its self-driving cars to be extra careful around children

Google's self-driving cars are quite careful around people, but especially so when children are around, the company revealed in a blog post Friday

When there are kids in the vicinity, the cars' software "understands" that they may behave differently from adults — they're more unpredictable, Google claims, and can be obscured behind parked cars

Google even used Halloween — the time when kids are dressed up in costumes, making their appearance potentially quite different from the norm — to help its cars recognize children

"This week, lots of little ghouls, superheroes and even robots were running around Google with their families, so we asked them to hang out around our parked cars.
