Autopilot for the Tesla Model S is here, but it's part of a $2,500 package

PALO ALTO, California — Starting Thursday, your Tesla Model S will receive an over-the-air software update, but the new features aren't necessarily free. The new 7.0 software will bring with it a more modern look to the operating system, some new instrument panel apps, climate control interface improvements and — oh, yeah — Autopilot.

To upgrade to Autopilot, some Tesla owners may have to pay as much as $3,000, which probably qualifies it as the most expensive in-app purchase ever. However, many drivers may have already purchased the package for $2,500 when they first bought their cars.
