Forget head-up displays. Mitsubishi's eX Concept has an augmented reality windshield

Ahead of its world debut at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month, Mitsubishi has revealed renderings of its latest concept car, the eX Concept.

The "active, pulsating design," as Mitsubishi puts it, while visually intriguing, isn't the highlight of the car. Instead, it's the concept's augmented reality (AR) windshield. Arguably, such an addition might seem a distraction. But it's quite the contrary, actually.

The AI infotainment system can make recommendations based upon the driver's hobbies.

The AR windshield aims to keep driver's eyes locked on the road ahead by displaying information normally shown on the dash-mounted infotainment screen out into the driver's forward field of vision. This data includes, but is certainly not limited to, navigation route guidance, vehicle-to-vehicle distance alerts (aimed at you tailgaters out there), lane departure warnings and traffic sign alerts, the information on which is gathered by the onboard camera-based road sign recognition system.
