13 reported killed in Oregon college shooting
At least 13 are reported dead at Umpqua Community College in southern Oregon after a gunman began shooting at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Though early reports were not clear on whether the assailant was dead or in custody, USA Today now confirms that he was killed by police, and that there was only one shooter.
At least 20 more were reported injured, with 13 confirmed admitted to local hospitals.
The incident "was contained to one classroom," with police arriving within minutes, according to reports.
According to The Oregonian, officers from Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded around 10:40 a.m. to reports of shootings at the college.
Scanner reports indicated the suspect is down. Multiple ambulances are on scene. Some media outlets are reporting at least 15 people are dead.
Police are clearing the science building at this time.
Other sources, such as KTLA News, report that the suspect was being held, thought little seems clear at this point.
The Douglas County Fire District No. 2 first tweeted about the shooting around 10:45 a.m.
The fire department later stated there were multiple casualties. The district tweeted just before 11:30 a.m. that the active shooter scene was "code 4," meaning no further emergency response was needed, and all patients had been transported.
The school, north of Roseburg, Oregon, has about 3,000 full-time students.
