Collision avoidance tech earns Volvo's XC90 an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating

Volvo made a name for itself decades ago by being safety-obsessed — long before it was in vogue to do so. Since then, virtually every other automaker has stepped up its safety game, putting the Swedish brand into a bit of an identity crisis. Doubling down on what it does best, build ultra-safe family haulers, it released the second-generation XC90 and set the goal that by 2020 no one will be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo car.

It seems its investment has paid off; the 2016 XC90 has been awarded the lauded Top Safety Pick+ rating from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). As you can see in the video below, the car excelled in the Institute's most strenuous test, the small overlap, the results of which "showed a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity," the IIHS reported in a prepared statement.
