Former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop to leave Microsoft

Stephen Elop, the former CEO of Nokia, is leaving Microsoft as part of a new reorganization.

Elop, who ran the Lumia division within Microsoft after Nokia's acquisition in 2014, will leave Microsoft "after a designated transition period."

In an email to employees, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said, "Stephen and I have agreed that now is the right time for him to retire from Microsoft. I regret the loss of leadership that this represents, and look forward to seeing where his next destination will be."

In September 2010, Elop became Nokia's CEO. Then in February 2011, Elop a wrote Jerry Maguire-esque "Burning Platform" memo lamenting Noka's precarious position in the mobile world. That memo led Nokia to abandon its Symbian and MeeGo operating system lines, and go all-in on developing for Microsoft's Windows Phone platform. Read more...
