On April 24, 2013, a factory complex in Dhaka, Bangladesh, called Rana Plaza — where thousands of laborers worked on outsourced textiles for major brands like Mango, Joe Fresh and Benetton — collapsed due to three ignored structural cracks that were found earlier that morning. More than 1,130 people were killed in the accident.

While this catastrophe was a wake-up call, the story is not unique to Bangladesh — cheap human labor is sourced in various countries like Cambodia and Pakistan, where local economies are bound to the garment industry, despite such poor working conditions. Read more...
