Yemenis call capital a 'ghost city' as airstrikes scaled back

A day after Saudi Arabia announced an end to the monthlong Operation Decisive Storm against Shiite rebels in Yemen's capital and the north of the country, Sanaa residents documented the destruction left in its wake.

Hundreds have been killed since the operation began in March, and a barrage of airstrikes on rebel-held areas have left buildings in ruins.

Sanaa, which has seen weeks of bombardment, was calm overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, when several residents ventured back out onto city streets to survey the damage.

Muhammad Awadh, who lives in Sanaa and works with aid organization Save the Children, said Yemenis have been describing it as a "ghost city." Read more...
