Obama Says U.S. Will Send Up to 300 Military Advisers to Iraq

Facing a crisis in Iraq that is threatening to pull the country apart, President Barack Obama took to the White House briefing room on Thursday to announce his latest decisions:

  • He said he was dispatching up to 300 military advisers to Iraq to assist the government in its fight against the radical militant group ISIL.

  • He left open the option of "targeted" military action in the future, and said the U.S. would increase its intelligence efforts in Iraq to identify targets...

  • ... but he reiterated that U.S. combat troops would not return to Iraq.

  • He called on Iraqi leaders to govern with a more "inclusive agenda" to ensure the country does not descend into civil war...
