Waffle House Denied an Employee a $1,000 Tip Because It Wasn't in Cash

A waitress at a Waffle House in Raleigh, North Carolina, is being forced to return a very generous tip she received from a stranger at the behest of company policy, resulting in a public outcry against the breakfast chain.

A patron dining at the restaurant on May 11 at 3 a.m. gave Shaina Brown, 26, a $1,000 tip on his credit card for a meal that cost $7.55. But Waffle House refused to run the transaction on the tip; its tipping policy states that unusually large tips must be dispensed either through check or cash. When a customer leaves a tip using a credit or debit card, he is notified that he will be refunded the amount that was tipped. Waffle House did not specify what constitutes a large tip. Read more...
